20 Best Opening Scenes From Recent Horror Movies
13. 28 Years Later
28 Years Later is never wilder than in its closing moments, but the long-awaited sequel nevertheless begins with a scene that ties directly into that shocking cliffhanger ending.
The story begins in 2002 during the initial outbreak of the Rage virus, where a group of children are sat watching the Teletubbies when their home in the Scottish Highlands is attacked by a fleet of the infected.
Danny Boyle holds absolutely nothing back here - it's implied that all-but-one of the kids are torn apart by the infected, leaving only young Jimmy (Rocco Haynes) alive as he flees to a nearby church.
There his father, a minister, fails to offer Jimmy much comfort, believing that the Rage virus has foretold the day of judgment and that it's all part of God's plan.
After Jimmy's father gives him a cross necklace, he hides as the infected invade the church and quickly turn his father. Once the coast is clear, Jimmy flees the church by himself.
We don't see Jimmy again until the very end of the movie, where he's played in now-adult form by Jack O'Connell, but it instantly confirms that Boyle has lost none of his knack for viscerally intense horror filmmaking.
