20 Best Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century
2. Dredd
Finally! We all got the Judge Dredd movie we deserved! The one we always bloody deserved! Finally we can forget that hot, moist piece of trash from Sylvester Stallone because now we have our true Judge Dredd. And he doesn't take his goddamn helmet off!
Plot wise, Dredd is pretty sparse and straightforward: there's a bad person in a building, the person's at the top, lots of goons in between, Dredd and Anderson - Karl Urban and Olivia Thrilby respectively who are both cast perfectly - have to get to the top, there's a lot of bang bang, shooty shooty from bottom to top. Not dissimilar to The Raid
Visually speaking, however, Dredd is an utter feast. The action throughout the movie is pretty much constant, with little breathing time. Oxymoronically, the violence in Dredd is beautiful. Thanks to the ultra-saturated slow-mo visuals, the action and destruction is almost hallucinogenic - which is precisely what the filmmakers intended. The sound design is also absolutely stunning - Justin Bieber's music is in this film, look it up because it's super cool and we're not even kidding.
It's such a shame that Dredd wasn't the box office hit it deserved to be, meaning we won't ever see the sequels that Alex Garland had planned - intending to cover classic storylines like Democracy as well as introducing Judge Death. Oh well, guess we'll just have to wait for Mega-City One, whenever the hell that'll be.
