20 Best & Worst Movies From 2016 Oscar Nominees

15. Cate Blanchett

Best: Blue Jasmine (2013) Though her note-perfect performances as Elizabeth and Katharine Hepburn are both well worthy of acclaim, Blanchett's titular turn in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine - for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress - stands head and shoulders above the rest of her CV. Like all of the Academy's favourites, the performance is deep, complex and nuanced, constantly floating from neurotic to something distinctly more dangerous. It's an archetypal Allen construction, but the subtleties all belong to Blanchett. Worst: The Hobbit (2012-14) To be frank, Blanchett really didn't need to be involved in Peter Jackson's bloated adaptation of The Hobbit at all, but her role in the Council Of Elrond was added in the interest of more running time and more drama. Unfortunately the decision to turn her from ethereal wildcard to ass-kicking witch ruined the character, and there's something uneven about Blanchett's performance that doesn't help either.
