20 Biggest Things The Harry Potter Movies Left Out
19. The Carrows' Reign Of Terror
In The Book
When Snape takes over as Headmaster of Hogwarts, he (or more appropriately Voldemort) installs the Carrows as the Heads Of Discipline, as well as teaching Dark Arts and Muggle Studies. They're as fearsome as they are reprehensible, allowing their pupils to practice the Cruciatus curse on first years (allegedly) and generally terrifying the student body with their hateful violence.
Their downfall comes when Harry returns to Hogwarts; Alecto is hit with a Stunning Spell by Luna (though not before she touches her Dark Mark) and Amycus makes the mistake of spitting in McGonagall's face and pissing Harry off enough to get a Cruciatus curse to the chops.
In The Film
Sadly, the Carrows were cut almost completely, aside from appearing in the background of a couple of major scenes, and then being taken down when Snape deflected two of McGonagall's spells at them, knocking them unconscious. Which he probably did on purpose, but it was still nothing like what they deserved.
Ultimately most of their lines and actions went to other characters - predominantly Bellatrix and Fenrir Greyback.
Was It A Positive Cut?
For wizards of their ferocious billing, they are both undone in the films with little effort, which robs Luna of a rare badass moment and Harry of a glimpse of the esteem he holds McGonagall in. They should have been allowed to live up to their badass mythology, which would have given us even more reason to hate Snape's time as Headmaster.
