20 Black Movie Characters Hollywood Should Learn From

7. Annie Farrell (Collateral)

Jada Pinkett Smith€™s portrayal of this character is excellent, but even on a script level, what is ostensibly a typical quick-thinking working-girl character has plenty of real nuance, bringing out many dimensions in just a few pages. She has important work to do in her life, but through what we see of her appealing personal side, Annie ultimately conveys a curious yet fitting similarity to Jamie Foxx€™s Max Durocher. Not only are they supposed to get together, but we believe, like on a really great date in real life, that it€™s actually possible. We feel that excitement emanate right off the screen. Collateral is a truly diverse movie and was very successful critically financially, proving that the world is ready for more, and, with its skillfully-crafted characters and cinematography, not just within the action genre. Annie does so much in a few brief scenes. She could easily have been the lead of an average romantic comedy or drama marketed to everyone. Indeed, many filmmakers out there want to use or have already created such characters. Characters like this need much more attention and support.
