20 Black Movie Characters Hollywood Should Learn From

14. Perry White (Man Of Steel)

Perry White is supremely fascinating when done right, and Laurence Fishburne brought that understanding with him in spades. Similarly to Michael Clarke Duncan in Daredevil, Fishburne€™s Perry is not an excuse to include a black character among a predominantly white cast. For me, the presence he brought to every one of his scenes when I saw the movie was spot-on. Not only did I believe he was Perry White, I felt he was real, and I€™m not usually hit so hard by scenes with Laurence Fishburne. Man of Steel€™s Perry White brings such honest truth to Perry€™s usual themes involving journalism and compassion, and Fishburne using his inspiration of Ed Bradley makes things even more human and immediate. It brings a flavor of current facts and concerns that really elevates the role and the movie€™s themes. Perry White can be more than a fast-talking, curmudgeonly editor. And in this version of Superman, Lawrence Fishburne made that happen. This is a lesson in what good casting can do for a movie. He was perfect for the job.
