Far from univerally loved by critics at the time (and indeed since), this grubby politicised court drama set against the ominous shadow of prison mistreatment was notable for great performances from Kevin Bacon and Gary Oldman.

Yes, it changed history to make Bacon's broken character more sympathetic, but you can't criticise it for that liberty; particularly when it produced easily one of the actor's best performances.
