2. Goldeneye

Batman Forever Jim Carrey
Eon Productions

If it wasn't for rights disputes in 1990, Goldeneye might never have even existed: a 1990 alternative Bond film starring Timothy Dalton actually got to the point of having its poster debut in Cannes, but then MGM and Albert Broccoli fell out and the rest is history.

Far from the gritty, pouty Bond of now, Brosnan's Bond was wittier, sillier and still soaked in retro (including the faintest whiff of sexism), but Goldeneye's story of betrayal was irresistible and Sean Bean's villain a franchise high-point.
