20. The Walkie Talkie Steven Spielberg Nod (Watchmen Trailer)

The Watchmen trailer included a very weird nod to the fact that, in modern edits of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Steven Spielberg replaced the guns in policeman's hands with walkie talkies in the scene in which E.T. and Elliott take to the skies on a bicycle. Watchmen director Zack Snyder explains:
It was a total Spielberg reference. Because I was like, €˜Well, it worked for Spielberg, so we should do that. Just put a walkie-talkie in his hand!€™ The editors were like, €˜But then you cut to a real gun!€™ but I€™m like, €˜No one will ever see that; they€™ll think he had a gun in the other shot, so it€™s fine.€™
The walkie talkie/gun was only pointing at the audience for less than a second, but the Motion Picture Association of America still managed to spot it, which is quite remarkable.
