20 Comedy Movies You Must See Before You Die

15. Ghostbusters (1984)

Columbia Pictures

"Who you gonna call?" We won't insult your intelligence by answering that now famous question, because everybody knows the answer, and... Okay, okay: the answer is "Ghostbusters!"

So here is Ivan Reitman's very '80s, but somehow very timeless special effects comedy masterpiece, which stars the immortal Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis as a trio of scientists turned supernatural investigators, whose battle with the boogie men on the other side gave rise to classic quote such as: "Back off, man, I'm a scientist." Seriously - so cool.

The storyline is utter nonsense, of course, as one would expect from a movie about hunting ghosts, but there's something charming and brilliant about the way in which Ghostbusters takes itself somewhat seriously; sure, it's an outright comedy movie first, and a supernatural horror flick second, but the lines occasionally blur.

Best remembered now, perhaps, for its brilliantly catchy theme song, Ghostbusters is often hailed as the pinnacle of '80s comedy ventures - and it's certainly one of the best efforts to have ever come from both Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd.
