It’s sad that this overblown misfire is better known than its source material, because Steve Gerber’s series was smart, funny and bitingly satirical.

Focus grouped to within an inch of its life by producer George Lucas, who wanted another big bucks franchise, Howard doesn’t work as comedy, fantasy or as an effects movie. It’s where entertainment goes to die.

At least Lucas maintained a sense of humour about the picture. When it laid an egg at the box office, he said it’d go on to become a cult classic.
