Comic book movies have been everywhere for decades now, thanks in large part to the relatively recent rise of cinematic superhero universes.
Due to their visual style and often impressive scope, it's little wonder that comic books have become such a beloved go-to for filmmakers looking to bring a big story to life. Whether it's a superhero epic, a dystopian view of humanity's uncertain future, or a gothic revenge thriller, comics have given us plenty of films to enjoy.
But how many of them are actually good?
From movies that faithfully adapted their source material to those that played with their inspirations to create something wholly unique, the following films are surely some of the best comic book movies on offer, working with brilliant casts, wonderful storytelling and gorgeous imagery to sublime effect.
With that in mind, here are 20 comic book movies that are totally, 100% flawless.
20. Snowpiercer (2013)
Though far from the first film that comes to mind when you think of a comic book movie, Bong Joon-ho's dystopian action-thriller Snowpiercer is nonetheless one of the finest you'll ever see.
Based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, the gritty sci-fi flick takes place on a train barreling through a post-apocalyptic wasteland, and follows the last remnants of humanity as their fractured existence erupts into a violent and revealing class war.
Claustrophobic and unsettling, Snowpiercer tackles themes such as oppression and inequality with gusty action sequences, haunting twists, and committed character work from its core cast, which includes the likes of Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, and Song Kang-ho.
Sure to leave you gasping for air but begging for more, Joon-ho's English-language debut is a searing thriller, and remains one of his best films to date.
