20 Coming-Of-Age Movies That Are Totally Flawless
4. City Of God (2002)
Of all the movies on this list, City of God is the hardest to watch, but also one of the richest and most rewarding.
The harrowing Brazilian crime drama follows two young boys growing up in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, where they encounter crime, murder, and sadism that forces them to take radically different paths in life.
Raw and confrontational - even uncomfortable, in parts - City of God often defies genre, featuring elements of crime, mystery and action, but at it's core it's about nothing more than growing up in dire straits, and how we combat our past grief.
Though not for the fainthearted, City of God is a brutal, uncompromising drama any lover of cinema has to see with their own eyes.
