20 Most Controversial Movies Since 2000
1. A Serbian Film
If there's a controversial movie made since 2000 which has shocked, disgusted and outraged more people than A Serbian Film, we'd love to hear about it. With a set up which reads like a shopping list of themes guaranteed to cause offense - pornography, child rape, necrophilia and snuff movies are all thrown into the mix - it's clearly a movie made with every intent to elicit a response from as many people as humanly possible.
A struggling porn star (Sran Todorovi) agrees to play a part in what he believes will be a more "artistic" porn film and finds himself caught up in a world of more horrors than you could imagine in your worst nightmare, most of which is too shocking to describe here. Shot in digital, the producers found themselves facing questions from the police after sending the film for conversion to 35mm, proving that its controversial legacy began even before anyone else had seen it. Director Sran Spasojevi responded to the slew of criticisms upon its release in theatres by explaining, "It's about the monolithic power of leaders who hypnotize you to do things you don't want to do. You have to feel the violence to know what it's about." While the violence and brutality is depicted in such a dark and disturbing fashion it's hard to accuse him of being exploitative, nevertheless you're left wondering whether his justification of A Serbian Film as a political allegory for Serbia's past is really all that convincing.
