20 Most Controversial Movies Since 2000

12. Baise-Moi

On its release, Baise-Moi was touted by some as something of a feminist answer to the violent excesses of the likes of Quentin Tarantino. Graphic and uncompromising, it tells the story of Manu (Raffaela Anderson) who kills a man with his gun and steals his money before joining forces with Nadine (Karen Bach) and going on a killing spree. To call it unsophisticated would be an understatement - this made little difference to its box office takings, and Baise-Moi was a huge success in its native France.

Unfortunately, the film lacks the great screenwriting and direction of the better movies it seeks to emulate, emerging as a Thelma and Louise pastiche riddled with problems from start to finish. The main drawback lies in its inability to make any interesting points about the onslaught of violence, murder and nudity which gets paraded on screen throughout the film - instead, audiences are treated to cheap thrills and exploitation which in the end comes over as little more than adolescent fantasizing.
