20 Cult British Films You Need To See Before You Die

7. Rita, Sue And Bob Too (1987)

"Thatcher's Britain With Her Knickers Down!"
The above epithet was the tagline which advertised Rita, Sue and Bob Too. It is a very succinct and accurate appraisal of the movie, which basically revolves around the affair between a married man and two teenage babysitters. The film chronicles their various mishaps - mostly based on sexual shenanigans. This is not a movie for everyone. Some people of a delicate disposition may find it crude, lewd and very rude. It is, however, hilariously funny if you can get over the chaviness of Rita and Sue and the smugness of the hopeless Bob. It is extremely redolent of its time period - the 1980s - and doesn't shy away from showing the social problems of the age. But despite this facet of the film, the overall tone is farcical and comedic. The car sex scene is one of the funniest sex scenes in British cinema and the characters, despite their flaws, are mainly likeable. The only real thing you could take umbrage at is the appearance of horrendous British pop music has beens Black Lace. Hideous.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
