2. Marley & Me (2008)

The Ending €“ Everything is finally on track for the Grogan family. They have just moved to a tranquil farm in rural Pennsylvania, Jenny (Jennifer Aniston) feels fulfilled raising the children while John (Owen Wilson) has a position writing for the prestigious Philadelphia Inquirer. In short, life is good. Tragically however, Marley €“ the family€™s beloved yellow Lab and titular character €“ suddenly begins to start showing his age, developing both arthritis and deafness. A series of GDV attacks puts Marley past the point of surgery and they make the painful decision to have him euthanised with John sitting at his old friend€™s side. Depressing Because €“ Anyone who has lost a pet will be in tears at the depressing end to this film. Witnessing that chubby little puppy with all the mischief it caused in its younger years slump into discomfort, old age and eventual death is all-but-certain to bring tears to even the eyes of dog-haters. The final months of Marley's death are made worse by the detailed account of his ill-health included in the film €“ he doesn't just succumb to old age but is overcome by a series of specified ailments. It's a weird thing how it is so tremendous easy to sympathise with animals. A Silver Lining? No dogs were harmed in the making of this film.
