20 Most Depressing Film Endings Since 2000

13. We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011)

The Ending €“The pièce de résistance in the loudening orchestra of chaos and destruction conducted by Kevin (Ezra Miller) is that subject all too frequently occurring in the American news €“ a high school massacre. Using his well-honed archery skills, the troubled youth begins to pick them off with his bow. When he has decided his work is done, he serenely walks out of the school and surrenders to the police. Meanwhile, his mother (Tilda Swinton) returns home to find the bodies of his father and sister in the garden laden with arrows. The film resumes two years later with Kevin€™s mother visiting him in incarceration. She asks Kevin why he murdered all of those people and he replies saying that he no longer knows. Depressing because €“ Nothing was ever done to prevent Kevin from committing his heinous acts of needless violence despite incidents that warned his parents throughout the film of his dark capabilities. The troubling scenes which make up the final act are made all the more depressing by the parallels to be drawn between Kevin€™s last stand and other high school massacres in America. Plus Eva's life, once extremely successful, is impossibly ruined. A Silver-Lining? Kevin€™s final statement to his mother may hint to the faintest trace of remorse for his crimes.
