20 Disaster Movies You Must See Before You Die

Michael Bay's Armageddon may be a snotty-nosed blunt object of an apocalypse movie, but it's also the only movie on this list that's part of The Criterion Collection, so there.

Bay's deliciously-premised, almost impossibly high-concept disaster flick milks the drama of a group of oil drillers heading into space to destroy an asteroid for every ridiculous drop it's worth.

The dialogue is daft, it's way too long, and yet Bay ensures every cent of his hefty $140 million budget appears on the screen.

This is meathead cinema that at least has the good sense to offer a strong, beating heart underneath, even if it might ultimately be all too much by the time Aerosmith chimes in.
