20 DVD Commentaries You Need To Hear Before You Die

7. Superbad

Participant(s): Greg Mottola, Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jonah Hill, Judd Apatow (and Apatow's daughter Maude) The experience of watching most of Judd Apatow€™s films is comparable to being a fly on the wall in a stoner€™s house, listening to their hilariously meandering conversations about how the world works. Apatow movies are normally made at least half-an-hour longer just by seemingly directionless yet fascinating episodes of dialogue. The cast and crew commentary for Superbad is basically just sitting through one of these conversations for nearly two hours. This commentary makes it clear that the actors involved are all too similar to the characters they play. The commentary is almost as hilarious as the 2007 comedy. Though there are many commentators involved, everyone has a distinct voice and they each offer their own funny anecdotes. A highlight is Cera€™s tale about his audition for The Sixth Sense when he didn€™t know that he was trying out for a horror-drama. Judd Apatow prohibits everyone involved from swearing as his daughter is present, so when Jonah Hill curses around halfway through an argument ensues. The actor mocks the film€™s producer for randomly doing €œbring your daughter to work day€. After the disagreement Apatow and his young child leave to watch the musical Spamalot and the rest of those involved start to swear profusely to make up for lost time.
