20 DVD Commentaries You Need To Hear Before You Die

4. This Is Spinal Tap

Participant(s): Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean (In Character) The experience of listening to This is Spinal Tap€™s commentary track is more similar to watching a sequel than listening to a DVD extra; however, the audio companion is must-listen material for anyone who claims to be a fan of the 1984 rock mockumentary. Not dissimilar from the aforementioned Tropic Thunder, the Spinal Tap commentary features the actors who played the band members in character. Watching years after the events of the film, the band express their annoyance at how they were portrayed in the movie and how Marty di Bergi produced a €œhack job€ because he couldn€™t be in the band himself. Actors Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean stay in character throughout and in doing so create an audio commentary which is just as hilariously watchable as the original mockumentary. Of course the decision to stay in character means that we learn nothing about the film€™s production and instead get to spend another hour-and-a-half listening to the ridiculous, self-inflated, delusional chatter of David, Nigel and Derek.
