Edge Of Tomorrow shocked a lot of naysayers, becoming one of the most downright entertaining sci-fi movies of the year. The film is a persistently fun and shockingly emotional story, which has Tom Cruise playing against his usual type as Major William Cage, a public affairs officer and former advertising executive who's forced to cover combat on the beaches of France during the next day's assault on invading aliens. The smart and witty film also offers a nice spin on the Groundhog Day premise in which a day is repeated over and over until the right outcome is achieved. The film finds new ways to make the time-loop that Cruises reluctant hero is forced to relive seem fresh, funny and emotionally resonate, while simultaneously serving the eye-candy spectacle a movie like this needs. Ultimately, after fighting the same battle over and over again Cruise's character becomes quite gifted at dispatching aliens. As he continues training, something magical happens, he turns into an incredible soldier. And the first time you get to see him be a full badass in battle is quite a thing to behold.
