6. The Man Upstairs Reveals Himself - The Lego Movie

When the idea of a "Lego Movie" first hit the internet, most people were confused. Would it be a tutorial? Would it be poorly animated minifigures just living the life? No. Instead, the film was this: a seriously deep lesson on how you can be awesome if you're yourself, and you try your hardest. And it wasn't poorly animated. The Lego Movie could have simply been a movie contained within the Lego universe and it still would have been a masterpiece, but the filmmakers took it up a notch by engaging with the forces which give the Lego toys life. Throughout the movie, €œThe Man Upstairs€ is referenced, and it€™s only in the final-act that we realise who it is: the human creator of Bricksburg, played by Will Ferrell himself, after the protagonist falls into the €œhole of infinity€ and ends up in the real world. From here, you learn that Ferrell€™s son Finn created the film's bad guy in his father€™s likeness, and the conflict that has been going on essentially reflects the war between order and creativity that Finn has with his father. Not only is this entire section of the movie a huge surprise, it€™s also extremely clever, and a surprisingly emotional testament to the power of the imagination.
