We may be deep into 2016 already, but as with any year, the best is typically yet to come later on, what with the glut of summer blockbusters heading our way, and of course, the ever-exciting Oscar season.

It is a year full of so much promise, from sure-to-be-iconic renditions of classic characters, to cameos we can't wait to feast our eyes on, shocking plot twists, and ground-breaking action sequences we won't soon forget.

Whether these scenes pay off to their full potential or are a sign of studio excess, they're most certainly going to be among the most memorable and passionately-discussed throughout the year, reflecting on what makes cinema so awesome...and perhaps a little of what makes it less so as well.

From the year's most expensive, anticipated movies to ambitious, low-budget "art house" fare, here are 20 essential movie moments that will define 2016...

20. Wolverine's Cameo - X-Men: Apocalypse

The Moment: In a climactic set-piece, Mystique and Quicksilver stumble across young Jean Grey and Cyclops among a pile of corpses, only to reveal that they've had "a little help" from their clawed pal, Wolverine.

Why It Will Define 2016: Because though Fox regrettably spoiled it ahead of time, it's still great to see Hugh Jackman playing the part that made him an icon to millions. It's surely not going to be more than a cameo, but considering how his last cameo in an X-Men movie worked out (don't act like you don't remember), we're betting that this is going to be pretty savage.

Then again, perhaps we'll all end up whining that he ducks out of the action just before the final fight against Apocalypse, which in fairness would be super-disappointing. Either way, a pumped-up Jackman slicing people up ahead of his final outing as Wolverine next year? We won't soon forget it.
