20 Essential Movie Performances That Will Define 2016

18. Tommy Lee Jones - Robert Dewey (Jason Bourne)

Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch
Universal

Release Date: July 29

The Role: CIA Director Robert Dewey, the man tasked with bringing Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) down after he resurfaces following a lengthy period of absence.

Why It'll Define 2016: Because this is a blatant attempt to have Jones spinning a new riff on his Oscar-winning work in The Fugitive, and considering how fantastic he can still be when the right fire is lit under him, there's every chance Damon and writer-director Paul Greengrass could bring out the best in the grizzled veteran.

While Jones probably won't be skulking around much on-foot chasing Bourne directly, you can bet that he'll still be there every step of the way, doggedly determined and creating one of the series' most intensely compelling villains.
