20 Essential Movie Performances That Will Define 2016
13. Benedict Cumberbatch - Stephen Strange (Doctor Strange)
Release Date: November 4
The Role: Stephen Strange, the world's top neurosurgeon whose career is destroyed by a car accident, and ends up becoming a student of the mystical arts under the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton).
Why It'll Define 2016: Because Benedict Cumberbatch's long-awaited arrival to the MCU is finally here, and it looks like a visually stunning acid trip of a film.
Though there are understandable concerns about Cumberbatch's peculiarly shifting accent in the trailer (he sounds American one minute and British the next), he looks like he'll fit perfectly into the collective of oddballs that make up The Avengers, and hopefully the movie around him won't be something forgettable on the level of Thor: The Dark World or something.
If Marvel Studios can sprinkle their usual magic, he'll be the talk of the town come year's end.
