Something To Live For tells the story of Jenny Carey (Joan Fontaine), an actress whose stage fright contributes mightily to her alcoholism. One day she meets and falls for a man named Alan Miller (Ray Milland), who is himself a recovering alcoholic. The only problem with this situation is the fact that Alan happens to be married to a sober and loving wife. And so, for the better part of the story he and Jenny have to struggle against two temptations instead of the single one of booze. Miller attempts to help his new friend by introducing her to AA, but his growing interest in her strains his marriage, and his wife quickly begins to suspect that his motive for assisting Jenny is a little more than humanitarian. Directed by George Stevens, Something To Live For is another film that has lost a bit of its edge simply due to its age. Nevertheless, this is a film that is more than worth checking out, especially as a time capsule of sorts; a look at how alcoholism was portrayed during this time in history.
