Wristcutters: A Love Story is a romance about suicide, which of course doesnt exactly make it the easiest film in the world to sell. But as weird as it sounds, its actually an incredibly sweet and thoughtful experience. The film is set in an afterlife that is specialised for people who have committed suicide. People have jobs and everything is like life on earth, just a bit worse. Zia (Patrick Fugit) has committed suicide and living in this afterlife, when he discovers his girlfriend committed suicide about a month after him. He sets out with his friend Eugene (Shea Whigham) on the road to find her. Along the way they meet Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon) who is looking for the people in charge. Directed by Goran Duki, Wristcutters is a small film of ambitions nicely scaled to the performances and story. Who knew that affectless characters could be so oddly affecting?
