20 Film Directors Who Could Define 2016

19. Justin Kurzel

Australian director Justin Kurzel doesn't exactly have the most extensive filmography. His feature-length debut came in 2011 with The Snowtown Murders, a dark and disturbing biopic about Australian serial killer John Bunting and his only other major film credit has been 2015€™s Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. Despite that, both films were critically well-received and it seems Kurzel has a bright future ahead of him € which is what makes his newest project all the more peculiar. Last year, we received word that Kurzel had re-teamed with actors Fassbender and Cotillard to create a film adaptation of Ubisoft€™s popular video game series, Assassin€™s Creed. Now, Fassbender is an actor with a spectacular track record, having just picked up an Academy Award nomination for his performance in Danny Boyle€™s Steve Jobs and it€™s hard to imagine that he would join a project if he wasn€™t confident it would be good. Admittedly, video game movies don€™t have the best track record €” but could Justin Kurzel be the man to break that streak? We€™ll just have to wait and find out.
