20 Films From The 1950s That Everybody Should Watch
9. The Ten Commandments
It was proudly touted as "The Greatest Event In Motion Picture History" atop film posters, and as the most expensive film ever made up until that time, it's understandable why. It featured one of the largest sets ever used in a film, a star-studded cast, and went on to gross over $120 million, making it not only one of the most expensive, but also one of the most financially successful films ever made. The film is epic in just about every regard. It was filmed in VistaVision on location in Egypt, featuring award-winning visual effects, and performances so impressive that the 220 minute (yes, that's 220 minutes) movie is as exhilarating as it is exhausting. Even to those who have little to no interest in the subject matter, the film should be seen simply for the experience. The Ten Commandments did provoke some controversy, however, with some viewers criticising its divergence from the biblical texts that it depicts. Regardless, leading man Charlton Heston would later go on to star in Ben-Hur, another religious epic which would eclipse even The Ten Commandments at the box office.
