20 Foreign Language Movies You Must See Before You Die

3. Parasite

Country: South Korea.

Plot: A working class family try to become wealthy by posing as unrelated individuals and working for a rich family.

Parasite is a masterpiece.

A deeply powerful story of class division in contemporary South Korea told in the most fiendishly entertaining, hilarious, thrilling, shocking and clever way imaginable, Parasite is an always-shifting Rubik's Cube of ideas, themes, metaphors and stunning film moments that finds ways to surprise you at every single turn.

As such, it's a nigh-on impossible film to describe in conventional terms, with it changing genre and tone so frequently from start to finish. Still, that's a great thing. Not only is it unpredictable as hell, but, with its mix of comedy, thriller, horror, satire and drama elements, it's a rare film that truly offers something for everyone.

In other words, it's a genuine miracle of a movie.

As well as the ingenious script, Parasite is backed up by Bong Joon-ho's tremendously controlled directing and a fantastic cast who give it their all. It winning Best Picture at the Oscars might've been an enormous shock, but it was one of the most pleasant surprises imaginable and no 2019 film deserved that award more than Parasite did.
