What is the finest foreign-language film ever made? Pretty much everyone you ask will have a different answer, but if Seven Samurai was described as such it's likely many would find that to be a very fair selection.
This enthralling adventure film from Akira Kurosawa is one of the finest achievements in the history of the film medium and it gets absolutely everything right. Not only is it a wondrously thrilling and visually stunning adventure in which every frame represents a work of art, but Seven Samurai is also a masterpiece of writing.
All the acting, especially from Toshiro Mifune, is tremendous, and all seven of the samurai are fully fleshed-out and developed characters. Story-wise, there's plenty of heart and substance amidst the action and the ending is extremely moving.
This glorious, legendary and virtually pwefect classic is a brilliant reminder of how good a film can be and it is very likely to speak to absolutely everyone regardless of what language they speak.
When it comes to foreign-language films, there are very, very few that come close to Seven Samurai. A masterpiece.
