15. Take This Waltz
Sarah Polley is a smart and understated filmmaker. Her last film, "Away With Her," was one of the best of that year. In "Take This Waltz," she carefully balances tragedy with comedy by portraying a realistic relationship that goes wrong for no real reason, something that seems to happen more often than not in real-life. Seth Rogen gives one of his career best performances, oozing a charm that would make you believe Michelle Williams would wan to be with him. The essential question that this film asks is whether or not a comfortable marriage is enough for happiness and the brutal honesty that comes from Polley's script and film provides a heartbreaking answer.
14. The Do-Deca-Pentathlon
The Duplass Brothers are the current kings of the mumblecore movement and they clearly stand out from the rest of the film movement due to their ability to find humor in situations that are relatable. In their past few films, they have dealt with sibling rivalry, something that - as sibling directors - must be a nod to their own relationship. The in-the-moment feel of the improv of several talented unknowns keeps the film's one joke fresh as it offers insight to sibling rivalries. And at a slight 76 minutes, the joke never gets worn out by length (which is nice). The clever insights and satirical look on everyday life shows why The Duplass Brothers remain the cream of the crop in the low budget world of mumblecore flicks.
