20 Greatest 90s Movie Villains

Agent Smith is, pretty much, the best character in The Matrix Trilogy. Well, who else could possibly match this guy? 

He's got all the best lines, he looks so cool, and, of course, Hugo Weaving is ridiculously great in the part. Here, he provides a glorious masterclass in OTT villainous acting, and we'll forget many other things from these movies before we ever forget his iconic delivery of "Mr Anderson..." Absolutely classic stuff. 

This nihilistic computer agent is one hell of an icon and he provides the perfect balance to Neo (Keanu Reeves), the film's protagonist. Neo's a blank-slate everyman, Agent Smith is a swinging-for-the-fences maniac, and the two complement each other nicely. Agent Smith isn't one of those deep or complex villains; rather, he's just a deliciously entertaining baddie who doesn't so much chew the scenery as devour it. Sometimes, that's all you need. 

This beloved villain was not only one of the best things in the classic original Matrix movie, but he also managed to be consistently great throughout the rest of this increasingly terrible trilogy. The less said about the new version (played by Johnathan Groff) seen in 2021's The Matrix Resurrections, the better, though.
