20 Greatest Dance Scenes In Movie History

3. Make 'Em Laugh - Singin' In The Rain (1952)

When it comes to movie musicals, it doesn’t get much better than Singin’ in the Rain. There isn’t a single element of the film, whether it’s the set design, the script, the music, which falters at any point. Everything single aspect of a great musical comes together perfectly to create a timeless film. And after all, it was produced under the direction of Gene Kelly, meaning there are plenty of glorious dance numbers to feast your eyes upon.

And whilst so many of them could have easy made this list, including the enchanting title song and the exquisitely choregraphed Good Morning, the one which steals the show is the Make ‘Em Laugh scene.

The irony of Singin’ in the Rain is how Don Lockwood is the hero of the story, and yet it was his friend Cosmo Brown who actually saved the day. He invented the movie musical, wrote the songs for the Duelling Cavalier and came up with lip syncing.

Furthermore, he practically upstages Don’s skills with the Make ‘Em Laugh number. Complete with gurning and literal flipping off the walls, there is no better slapstick to be found in any other movie. It’s exciting, comical and almost makes Donald O’Connor the unspoken star of the film.
