20 Greatest Ever Horror Movie Icons

10. Leatherface - Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Leatherface is the extremely efficient and mute killer in Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He likes to use mallets and chainsaws to snuff out his victims and he wears a mask made of human hide which makes him look absolutely terrifying. He is into cannibalism like the rest of his dysfunctional family and used to be a butcher at a meat factory. Funnily enough for such a scary character, Leatherface is supposed to be under his family's thumb and he is meant to be cowardly - killing on his family's command. Leatherface kills people and the meat is cooked and is served up in the family's station/restaurant, while the bones are used to decorate the family home. Although Tobe Hooper thought of him as a big baby, he still is a killer and a very dangerous man. In fact one of Leatherface's iconic moments comes when he is chasing Sally onto the road and she escapes. In a fit of fury, he brandishes his chainsaw in the air, throwing it around, mad that he has nothing to slice into. And that is how the film ends. Despite any girlish tendencies he is reputed to have, Leatherface is definitely a poo-your-pants scary horror film icon that you wouldn't want in your vicinity any time soon.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
