Okay, so everyone knows in the first Friday the 13th that it is his mother who is the killer, but the character of Jason Vorhees moves the film along. He comes in the form of memories of his mother Mrs Vorhees who thinks back to the time when he was a 10 year old boy. He also appears in the character Alice's hallucinations. In Friday 13th Part 2, rushed out as quick as possible to cash in on the original, Jason makes an appearance as the killer and largely remained a bad guy for the incredible 12 sequels that followed the original. In Part 2 the summer camp is re-established and Jason uses this opportunity to kill stupid teenagers in a variety of colourful ways with interesting implements. The introduction of Jason to the film as the villain marks out Friday the 13th Part 2 as an important movie in the horror genre, establishing Mr. Vorhees as one of horror's premiere icons. He never speaks, he never dies, he is an unstoppable killing machine. These traits have made him a particularly bankable franchise. He also wears a mask which takes away from his humanity (if there was ever any there to begin with). Basically, the viewer knows that Jason could kill them with a minimum of fuss, and that is what makes the film really scary.
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
