20 Greatest Ever Horror Movie Icons

20. Bub - Day Of The Dead (1985)

Bub is horror cinema's most iconic zombie. In Day Of The Dead, Romero crafts an extremely claustrophobic and hostile portrait of life after the zombie apocalypse. There is tension in an underground bunker between the military and the scientists. Dr Logan is a scientist known as 'Frankenstein' due to his gruesome experiments with zombies. Dr Logan has a pet zombie he calls Bub. Bub has been trained to appreciate classical music and he can flick through a Stephen King book. He is a pretty docile creature. When the evil military leader Captain Rhodes finds out that Logan has been feeding Bub the bodies of his men, he goes crazy and kills Logan. Bub escapes his chains and upon finding his master dead, grabs a pistol and goes off to deal some justice to Captain Rhodes. Bub is a symbol that, in the event of a major disaster like zombies over running the earth, humans remain the biggest danger to themselves with all of their aggression and jockeying for leverage. When Captain Rhodes is shot by Bub and Bub salutes him, it is a clear statement that the actions of the military were fascist and self defeating. Hubris indeed.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
