8. Kevin Peter Hall As The Predator In Predator
What the hell are you? I couldnt have asked a better question after this line was first uttered by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie. Arguably no other movie has had a greater impact on adolescent teenage boys, especially me, during the 80s than Predator. Initially the movie was to be called Hunter and star Jean-Claude Van Damme as the alien hunter, but because of creative differences, Van Damme left the project and production was temporarily halted. The original look of the creature was completely different than what we know of the Predator today. It originally had one eye and a head like a dog with a body of a bug-like humanoid. There have been stories as to who originally came up with the idea of the now classic Predator look. In the end the truth is probably that a lot of people had their hand in coming up with the idea of the look with Stan Winston leading his team of make-up artists in creating Kevin Hall as the Predator from head to toe. The Predator is nothing short of an intergalactic bad-ass with its long dread locks, deep seeded eyes and mandibles that flare open like a carnivorous flower exposing its sharp teeth. Stan also did a tremendous job in making sure that the weaponry he created for Predator accented how dangerous it really was. With Kevin standing at 73, its no wonder that Arnold was overwhelmed with the size of him after their first encounter with Arnold only standing at 62. What was to be a typical rescue mission ends up being a quest for survival that snowballs into a world of hurt for Arnold and his team. Yes, Arnold gets the best of the Predator in the end, but we all win for having the privilege of seeing the Predator do what he does best. 7. Tim Curry As Darkness From Legend
So many interpretations of The Devil have been found in movies throughout cinematic history. Whether they were comedic, scary or biblically accurate, none were as visually intimidating as Tim Currys character in the movie, Legend. Tim was the perfect choice to play the part of Darkness. His previous role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show proved that he can be as animated in his performance in bringing Darkness to life. The task in creating the make-up design was bestowed upon Rob Bottin. Robs reputation as an extraordinary make-up artist preceded him with his work in The Howling, The Thing and RoboCop. His design for this character was nothing short of a work of art. The height of the whole character was well over 10 feet and with massive black horns, it probably tipped at 13 feet. The overall complexion of it was a blood red that resembled a deep sunburn hot to the touch but being that it was from hell, fit the overall look. Tims performance as this character was more of a romantic stage actor with a sinister ulterior motive when trying to seduce Lili, played by Mia Sara, and also of a raging bull with yellow cat-like eyes that is hell bent on destroying Jack, played by Tom Cruise. The rest of the characters in the movie such as the goblin servant named Blix and the swamp troll named Meg Mucklebones were also beautifully sculpted, but it was Darkness that demanded the attention and rightfully deserved it with Robs talent at the helm in fortifying its place in movie make-up history.
