20 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 80s
4. Evil Dead II
Sam Raimi kick-started the 1980s with Evil Dead, one of the most iconic horror movies of all time and more proof that great horror often comes from the smallest of budgets, creating restrictions which the most inventive directors are able to work around with glorious results.
Returning to the franchise in 1987 for Evil Dead II, Raimi picked up where the first film left off but with a bigger budget, all of which appears to have been directly funneled into the special effects department. Bruce Campbell returns as horror hero legend Ash, wielding whatever weapons he can get his hands on to fight off a horde of demons, including a chainsaw which he wields in a most unusual manner.
It may be sacrilege to some to suggest that the sequel is better than the original (truth is they're both stunning examples of gore-fueled horror), but Evil Dead II ups the satire and turns up the gore a few more steps and really showcases Raimi's knack for creating hyper-kinetic thrills, liberally strewn with gross-out comedy.
