20 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 80s

19. Fright Night

Fright Night 1985
Columbia

Vampire movies have been popular ever since Nosferatu was released in the 1920s, with filmmakers forced to expand the style and scope of the subgenre to avoid become stale imitations, and Fright Night stands as one of the most entertaining forays into the lives of these bloodsuckers released in the 80s.

Starring Chris Sarandon as the neighbour with a very dark secret, Fright Night is a tongue in cheek suburban take on the vampire tale. When teenager Charley (William Ragsdale) grows suspicious about his neighbour's nocturnal habits, he calls in an "expert" in the shape of TV star Peter Vincent (Malcolm McDowall) to help him confront and defeat the creature of the night.

Featuring visual effects from the team who brought us Ghostbusters, Fright Night is a perfect balance of silliness blended with shlocky gore. Sarandon's performance is the real highlight, by turns suave and scary.
