The Amazing Spider-Man 2 may get a lot wrong, but one thing it absolutely nails is the death of Gwen Stacy, translated so effectively from the comic book panels to the big screen here.

During Spidey's final confrontation with the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan), he kidnaps Gwen and takes her to the top of a clock tower.

Though Spidey tries to get Gwen safely to the ground with his web, the ensuing battle causes the web line to snap, sending her plummeting to the floor.

Though Spidey thinks fast and dives to save his love, even firing a web to catch her, he's sadly a few moments too late, and Gwen ends up dying instantly when her head impacts with the ground.

It's a surprisingly brutal scene for a PG-13 movie, utterly unsentimental in its approach as Gwen has no dying words and Peter is simply left to digest his grief.
