If a film can draw any emotional response from an audience then it's doing its job, and the same can be said for specific characters, even if they are negative ones. While Hans Landa forced those watching into feelings of hatred and disgust, Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) sparked unmitigated fear.

Quite opposite to Landa, on paper Chigurh could have come across as a rather generic bad guy, hired to chase down a satchel of money to which he had no personal attachment. Even after that, his ridiculous haircut and bizarre weapon could have turned him into a gimmicky joke, but instead, Bardem helped to craft one of the most intimidating and intense villains ever.

Chasing on the heels of Josh Brolin's Llewelyn Moss, Chigurh was like something out of a horror film. Calm and collected to a disquieting level, with rarely a raised voice or temper lost, he was almost indifferent to everything he did, and the people he did or didn't kill based on the flip of a coin.

Even when he got seriously injured, his sheer force of will made him feel inhuman. A truly psychopathic terminator without a conscience, bound to kill anything he was pointed at.
