20 Greatest Revenge Movies Of All-Time

12. Munich

Universal Pictures/Dreamworks

Steven Spielberg's 2005 film, Munich, chronicles the true life story of the Israeli government's top secret retaliation against the Palestine Liberation Organisation after the horrific Munich massacre at the 1972 Olympics. As a tale of real life revenge, there is arguably no greater a story, and - as one would expect - Spielberg renders the tale with all the passion, skill and craftsmanship that such a story deserves.

The events following the Munich massacre pave the way for a different kind of revenge movie, of course, and this picture is just as much a "men on a mission" movie as it is a picture of retribution. Eric Bana stars as undercover Mossad agent Juval Aviv, though he's joined on his task by Daniel Craig, CiarĂ¡n Hinds, Mathieu Kassovitz and Hanns Zischler, all of whom offer up great and memorable performances.

It's not a perfect movie, but it's definitely a great one; as a chronicle of revenge, it puts forward a near inarguable case for the phrase "the truth is often stranger than fiction." And though the movie is, in essence, about an act of revenge, Spielberg is sure to remain evenhanded in his approach throughout.
