20 Greatest Revenge Movies Of All-Time

7. Get Carter

Get Carter
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Michael Caine offers up one of his finest performances in this gritty revenge flick about a London gangster who travels up to the very different land of the "North" to find out how, exactly, his brother was murdered.

Though Get Carter was originally met with mixed reception, the years have been undoubtably kind to this picture and it has amassed a huge cult following; Mike Hodges' film is now viewed as one of the most iconic of all British movies - and also as one of the best. Its modern reputation presumably stems from the way in which Get Carter succeeds in crafting a uniquely gritty tone, backed by an unforgettable jazz soundtrack.

Carter's quest is a tough one, of course, and there are moments of violence punctuated throughout its runtime - not to mention that unforgettable finale, which takes place on a beach in Newcastle. Pretty much, Carter poises the subject of revenge as mean ol' business, one not for the faint of heart. But there's no denying the fact that Caine's character - and the movie itself - reeks of cool.
