There are more than a few moments in His Girl Friday when the dialogue - which often overlaps - becomes so relentless you can't help but wonder if the actors had time to breath. When it comes to talkative comedies they don't get any more fast-paced than this. Adapted from the play The Front Page and directed by the prolific Howard Hawks, His Girl Friday stars Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell as a journalist and editor - and former husband and wife - covering the execution of convicted murderer Earl Williams (John Qualen). The plot twists and turns as quickly as the characters speak, delivering a barrage one-liners any stand up comedian would be proud of. It's not surprising that His Girl Friday is one of Quentin Tarantino's favourite movies - when it comes to incredible dialogue and zany pacing it's a masterpiece any aspiring writer would love to emulate.
