Horror fans with a taste for cheap but cheerful 1950s B-movies will find themselves in heaven watching Tremors - it's a loving homage to creature features like Them! and It Came From Outer Space, boasting improved special effects and a feisty Kevin Bacon in the lead role. The inhabitants of a secluded former mining settlement known ironically as Perfection come under attack from a large worm monster and are forced to use all the wit, cunning and resourcefulness they can in order to survive. It's a standard premise for countless monster movies, but Tremors strikes a perfect balance between building up the tension and dropping in the jokes and movie references. In an age of overused CGI the practical effects in Tremors make a welcome change - just make sure you avoid the many straight-to-video sequels, none of which live up to the standard of the original.
