20 Hidden Drama Movie Gems You Can Watch On Netflix
4. Fish Tank
One of the greatest British films ever made, Fish Tank marks the high watermark of British cinema of the last decade, with newcomer Katie Jarvis as its startling centrepiece. In spite of (or perhaps because of) her lack of acting experience, Jarvis excels as Mia, a fifteen-year-old wananbe dancer who cant seem to escape her council-estate trappings or her lust for her mothers new boyfriend, Conor (Michael Fassbender, great as always). Jarvis' chemistry with the much-older Fassbender is electric and, despite what the relationship will become, its early moments attain a kind-of realistic, genuine affection. The film descends into tragedy after that, though, and there's a truly shocking moment near the end involving Mia and Conor's young daughter, whom she kidnaps on a whim out of jealousy. As with other films on this list, Fish Tank is no easy watch. That rare British film to have a visual-style, Andrea Arnold's film is beautiful proof that, on its day, the UK can produce cinema to match any other country in the world.
