20 Hidden Drama Movie Gems You Can Watch On Netflix

19. The One I Love

Part rom-com, part rom-dram (did I just coin that?), part sci-fi, The One I Love makes for one of the more interesting small dramas of recent years (it was released in 2014), not least because its central premise is so beguiling: a couple (Ethan and Sophie, played, respectively, by Mark Duplass - of the Duplass brothers - and Elizabeth Moss - of Mad Men fame) on the brink of divorce escape to the countryside for some R&R and to find their "better selves". However, while they do indeed find their better selves, it's not as you might imagine, with the couple literally finding their better selves: duplicates of them who live in the house at the end of their retreat's garden. The duplicates are stripped of the real Ethan and Sophies' flaws, and better-looking to boot (Ethan's duplicate sheds his glasses and ruffles his hair for a more rugged look, for instance). I won't spoil what happens seeing as the main purpose of this list is to point people in the direction of films they likely haven't seen, but what I will say is that one of the couple ends up preferring the duplicate's company, to the point where the film's ending allows for one of the most inventive, truly ambiguous moments of recent cinema as a consequence.
