20. The Disappointments Room
While the The Disappointments Room is being marketed as more of a thriller than an outright horror film, it's still being touted as being in the same vein as Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Directed by D.J. Caruso and inspired by a true event, The Disappointments Room tells the story of one familys terror-filled encounter within their own home. Looking for a fresh start, Dana (Kate Beckinsale) and David (Mel Raido), together with their five-year-old son Lucas (Duncan Joiner), move into their dream house, a beautiful old rural home. Hidden within the attic is a secret room; when a series of events lead Dana to discover the long lost key to this room, she accidentally unlocks a host of horrors that reveal the houses past is terrifyingly tied with her own. Though we may never see Kate Beckinsale in that tight vinyl outfit again as badass vampire warrior Selene, her days of making genre films are thankfully not over.
